About this Project

The web-based image archive serves as a companion to my larger Great Kantō Earthquake related research projects. These projects have received generous financial support from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (GRF-750309), the National Endowment for the Humanities (FA-37067), and the Australian Research Council (DP-0208116). Without support from these organizations I would not have been able to carry out the extensive research in Japan that was essential for this or any of my related 1923 Tokyo earthquake projects.

I was also supported by a University of Hong Kong Teaching Development Grant in the development of this website as a companion to two courses I teach at the University of Hong Kong. This grant enabled me to employ Ms. Wilhelmina Ko who not only scanned all of the images associated with this website, but also designed the web pages.
